I've never ridden the Canyon Train, but my parents did in the late 1970's. I doubt the scenery has changed much but was glorious according to my Dad. He rarely complimented things but was wowed by the experience. They rode the Canyon Train shortly after Labor Day or early September.
The railroad also offers a "regular" passenger train running between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst up on edges of civilization.

I took the opportunity to ride the line southward from Hearst to Sault Ste. Marie in June 1988. The regular passenger train was an old fashioned "Whistle Stop" affair, where you tell the conductor where you want to stop and they'll do just that. To board the train in the woods, all one need do is be at a spot before the train arrives and "flag" the train. A couple of times, my southbound train was rolling at track speed, 35-40mph, when we were flagged for a pick-up. The train then backed to the equipment, was loaded into the baggage car and we were again rolling with a few minutes delay. The passenger train is the only way to access the backwoods, so picking up and delivering people & equipment to out of the way locations is all in a day's work. And by "equipment" this could be motorcycles, canoes & camping gear or groceries for the wilderness resorts. In season, they carry snowmobiles and motorcycles. To load such equipment, one just rode it up a provided ramp from the ground. The baggageman made certain to open the door on the opposite side for any Evil Kenevil's...... Once in the baggage car, the equipment was strapped down for the trip. Once in the Soo, a simple ride down the ramp got me unloaded. What was interesting is motorcycle cost less to "ship" than me!
