The white elephant flood sale in this chapter made me think about how the aftermath of a similar incident would be different today.
The labels on the cans would probably not come off, the glue used today is plastic based and not water soluble.
There would probably be a lot more damage to the infrastructure of the store, for example, all the electricity powered chiller/freezer displays would probably be scrap. The checkouts would probably suffer the same fate too.

You're right! Try to pay at any register in a retail establishment if their computer is down. About 10 years ago I went to a restaurant to pick up the meals I had ordered and their computer was down. I wanted to pay by credit card and fortunately the manager had old sliding credit card imprinter and some multi-carbon credit forms so I was still able to pay. I don't think that would work anymore!
