Stan Warshawski? Interesting! I love these cross-overs.
From the wiki - Stan's father was a Polish fencer (on 1952 Olympic team) and defected around 1953 - he had hoped that Stan would become a fencer but when that didn't turn out, he encouraged him to do what he wanted to do as long as he did it well.

Sword is an independent novel, unrelated to any other books, but that doesn't mean you won't find a familiar character or two. Some names got changed from the original draft for the final to avoid confusion, and Wes did want to change another that we did not because we think it no longer matters. Wes was hoping to use Sword to start off a new series, and in that case, name changes would have happened. Since there is no series, we didn't bother. Have fun with it. I think it's a darned good story. Too bad there will be no sequels. Not Wes

It would have made for a fun alternate Spearfish Lake continuity. Of course, if the names all got changed so that there was no mention of folks from other stories, it could still be considered main timeline, but as it is, it's an alternate timeline... shades of DC and Marvel Comics!
At this point I'm just grateful the Kathy & Dan have kept the site going and allowed for the posting of those works Wes had said were close enough for final edits if he died prior to posting them himself...

John, I think you mean alternate Spearfish Lake Tales continuity. This story is in sort of a Toledo Ohio alternate, and some familiar names you might meet have a history that doesn't match that found in other published books. It's mainly because Wes isn't around to fix things. It's actually closer to Bradford than Spearfish Lake itself, and there are some Bradford denizens who had names modified to keep them from showing up in the Wiki twice as different people. For instance, you've all met Liz Kennedy, the big blonde who runs the newsroom when she's there. Mentioned in chapter one, she appears on and off throughout the book. Her name in the original draft of the story was Liz Austin. There's a Bradford '88 by that name, who this Sword character isn't, different lady all around, so we changed her surname to Kennedy just to keep any similarities from causing problems. There will be other characters who show up who've had like treatment, and I'll try to mention them at opportune times. Do watch for other characters like Stan to creep in, though there may only be one.
Wes was, of course, planning on sticking around and finishing all these stories. Didn't happen, so we editors have to do it for him. We can't do enough. In some cases that's good, because you get to see and hear about what we did. Wes himself seldom offered that sort of info. I'd rather he made it so stories could be put up with his polish on them, but it didn't happen.
