I checked the article for water temperature - similar to Tofino on Vancouver Island most of the time, but I've actually seen people surfing in the Tofino/Long Beach area on New Years Day. I asked at the local surf shop and the water temp was 6.6 Degrees Celsius - that's close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and a lot colder than I'd like to put up with. I think the local surfers and the Norse surfers are both NUTZ!

When I was an active scuba diver we uesd to cut holes in the ice on lakes to dive in the winter. Because the ica stopped all wave action the water was normally very clear under the ice, at least untill we stired it up. The deeper lakes warmed up a bit as you got deeper as water is at its most dense at 4 degrees C. Deep fresh water here in the UK tends to always be 4C. I never felt NUTZ but it takes all sorts.

Call me prejudice. But I picture surfing as on a beach in a tropical paradise.
