I often find find neat pictures of old tow trucks, may have something to do with being in the towing business Anyway, I thought this may have been in use around the time of the Great Warsaw Fire....

Great picture! Since that story was set in 1981, was that truck from the 1970s? Also, who was the manufacturer, Chevrolet? I can't tell from the hood ornament.

From the cab style it looks late '40s or early '50s to me.

Yes, it's definitely a Chevrolet. 47-53 for that body style cab over.

I'd say 1950-51 at a guess - the lower portion of the grill, the front fenders and the cab shape match my recollection of my father's 1951 - Chevrolet, two-ton farm truck. The upper portion of the grill would be an add-on to achieve the height needed for a cab-over, so would the short hood. Of course that doesn't meant much because there weren't a lot of changes made from year to year at that time - at least not in the semi-large trucks as Jase mentioned. If I remember correctly half-ton pickups were a different story - I seem to remember that in 1952 the pick-ups had a five-window cab, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the information. Hoselton is still in business in Rochester NY. They still sell Chevrolets and other brands of automobiles.

I just got an answer back from a friend who is a truck nut back home in Alberta and have a correction on what I previously posted - it was my brother-in-law who owned the 1951 Chevrolet 2-ton. My father's was a 1947 0r '48 and not a '51 as I recalled it. Sorry about the mistake, but then my memory isn't perfect after all. LOL.

FYI, it's a '48 Chevy cab-over. It has been completely restored, sold twice, and now resides at the International Towing and Recovery Museum in Chattanooga, TN; saw it last week.
