Very interesting article. I guess they used nickels because they only worth 5 cents and the relative softness of the metal.

Wow! Some really good ones there! I think I told the story elsewhere that I tripped across the whole idea of hobo nickels while I was hunting around eBay to find out what old nickels were worth. I'd never heard of such a thing but knew instantly I had to work them into Redeye.

You could be right about the nickels being so soft. I remember a lot of them having almost all of the features wore off as a kid. I guess they were chosen over the pennies because they were a bit larger. At least one of the examples was a quarter.
