eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/index.html?zoom=1Above is a link from Google for an interactsive maps that can be panned and zoomed for any location in the U.S. The Hopkinsville, Ky. center line is just 2 blocks north of the county high school where I graduated in 1960. 'The Dycusburg, Ky. center line near Paducah is less than 5 miles from my younger brothers's home. The Fairview, Ky. center line is less that 5 miles from my sister's home.

It sounds like a good reason to have a family reunion on August 21st. A win-win situation.

I just saw a BostonGlobe.com article re-posted on Yahoo that said of the 240 counties along the central path of the total solar eclipse, 92% of them were won by Trump in the 2016 election. I guess it was a slow news day in Boston. I wonder if he will try to take credit for that phenomenon. It's sort of like Al Gore claiming to have started the internet. Politicians seem to want to claim credit for good things and repudiate the bad.

I am making no political stand here but that often repeated story about Al Gore was simply a statement by a political opponent that was successful beyond all expectations. Check it on any of the Internet fact-checking sites. Gore was the cosponsor of the Senate funding bill that converted the old Arpanet military network into the public Internet which at that time was called the Information Super Highway. The World Wide Web or www was later invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and others created browsers and then the Internet was ready for the public to use.

Dragging this at least approximately back onto the original topic, the Youtube channel Vintage Space has a nice, short video about the first observation of an eclipse from outer space - the 1966 flight of Gemini 12, with astronauts Jim Lowell and Buzz Aldrin. BTW, both of those astronauts are still alive - it would be interesting to hear their account of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfszBPZYuFQ&t=215s

In 1979 during the last total eclipse that was over the USA, the school I attended in St Joseph, MO had an eclipse party even though at the location we were at it was only visible as a partial one.
That location is only about a mile and a half away from the path that marks the center of the totality.
Depending on exactly where Marienthal College is located near Kansas City, it might be (barely) within the zone of totality.

I'm planning on going to catch the event in Kentucky, weather permitting. Gonna be fun since I'll have a new book starting that weekend, and putting out what's usually the third biggest paper of the year. Being gone Monday will mean a short week and a very busy day Tuesday. I sure wish I could take a couple more days because there are some things in Western Kentucky I'd really like to see.

Wes,
If you decide to visit west Kentucky to see the eclipse you might want to avoid the Hopkinsville site if you don't like big crowds. The county has a population a little over 50,000 but if the weather is clear they are expecting a crowd of about 500,000 in the area for the week before. One Saudi rich man rented a local house for $100,000 for the week. All motels, hotels, RV parks, private homes, etc. have long been booked up. After the eclipse the state police will have all local roads all lanes out towards the nearest ramp to I-24. Use the link I posted above to pick a location nearer to you that should be less crowded. Also the total eclipse duration will be 0.2 seconds shorter at Hopkinsville. The maximum duration of 2 minutes 40.2 seconds will be in the area of Carbondale, Illinois where Southern Illinois is located. You should be able to connect to the college or the local paper there for tips for the best viewing in that area. If you want to try a motel in Paducah, Kentucky I can put you in touch with my younger brother at Eddyville, Ky. for tips on viewing locations. If you would like to get in touch with me my email address is jescott@att.net

I have a request for anyone going to view the total solar eclipse. If it is possible, maybe you could take photographs of the event and post them on this forum or some other suitable location. I'm around 500 miles or more from the closest viewing point and family obligations prevent me from traveling that far.
Thanks for your consideration.

Weather permitting Wes will be in the vicinity with a couple of shade 14 welder's goggles and a camera but because of time limits no telescopes.
