Maybe I'm missing something here, but I would think that once the sled showed up without the musher that a search party would have been sent out right away.

It's hard to know who needs the other more: the dogs or the musher.
In Wes' original sled dog story, Busted Axle Road, the old musher, Jim Horton tells Mike and Mark a story of how his dogs saved his life when he was knocked off his sled and lay unconscious in the snow. Fortunately, the musher in Alaska woke up and was able to get to the checkpoint on foot.

I just read that Mitch Seavey, aged 57, won the 2017 Iditarod in record time.

Old Guys Rule - Thanks for proving it Mitch. His son, Dallas, the former record holder finished second. Awesome men, great trainers, awesome dogs!!! I was trying to find if Dallas's 2nd place win would have broken the speed record if his dad hadn't finished first. I couldn't find that info though.

Looking at the race results pages, Dallas' time this year is the second fastest time overall. Two other racers also beat last year's record
Since 2012, either Mitch or his son has won the Iditarod.

I've read that at least five dogs have died.

With the number of dogs involved, statistics say that some dogs will die over two weeks whether running or not. Doesn't make it any easier for the musher's grief though.
Lin is a long-time musher and local character. I know his son well, starting when I helped sew up his thumb when he was about 14 using the vet's kit. We played soccer together for years.
