It's the best part of being a writer. I can at least mentally have adventures and do things that are physically impossible. Granted that Joe/Joan and other books are largely thought experiments, at least I can enjoy them to some degree. If I were somehow to be dropped into Joan's shoes, I doubt I would do all the same things, and maybe not most of them, but I would sure take better advantage of the new life than I did the first time around.

That's a perk of being an author. You can create stories and characters that can do things you wish you had done without suffering the consequences. One of the consequences is the many emails asking for sequels.

Ernest, did you get any requests for sequels for your book, Mallard Heir? I would guess probably not. Of course, you couldn't use that device every time. I don't need a "closed" ending in every case since my imagination still works fairly well.

I don't need a "closed" ending in every case since my imagination still works fairly well. G'day Boyd, I provided a quick ending to the story just so I wouldn't get a bunch emails asking for a sequel. What really bugs me is the people who do not read the end notes or my SoL blog where I have all the answers re sequels etc., then send me emails asking about them. Some stories lend themselves to sequels, some don't, some are intended sequels from the start. With Survivor I broke it there because the next part of the story is a very different pace and change of attitude, also I don't have all of the middle planned out yet, but I'm working on it. As to Mallard Heir, there is room for me to come back later if I think of something for a sequel, but I don't plan on it, if I do it'll probably involve the kids and not the adults, but no plans right now.

I was reading the latest chapter of Joe/Joan, and had a sudden inspiration: is Joan really sort of a thought-experiment on Susan - how to travel the world on someone else's dime?

Yeah, you're probably right, at least to a degree.

Wes, I know you had wanted to discuss this book in this forum. It's had the most comments and near the top of number of views. However, it's too easy to create spoilers that would ruin the reading pleasure for those who don't buy the book in advance. I don't know how that could be prevented without someone monitoring the comments. I think that would take away from the spontaneity and decrease participation. Anyway, I believe that you did a good job with this book. I hope that some readers who are science fiction buffs would tell us how well you accomplished the "do-over" aspect in their opinion.

In reference to Boyd Percy's comment on how well Wes did the "do-over", in thinking about when I was reading the various chapters I had to remind myself it was a "do-over". I would get wrapped up in a chapter where Joey was mentioned and had to prod myself to remember Jo was Joey in another timeline and had lived most of the same things already. So I would say Wes did an excellent job on developing the story around the "do-over".

Perhaps due to being an apparent contemporary, I have enjoyed reading pretty much everything you've written for years now.
As good as all that has been, this story is exceptional. I particularly appreciate the thought-provoking summation. It leaves me wondering (as any good mystery should) what is Truth and what is Fiction. In the end, it doesn't matter.
Outstanding! Thank you for your continued efforts to entertain and illuminate. Thank you also for your steadfast support of our many veterans of all kinds.

Coaster2 has just finished posting Life on Another Planet on SOL. I think many readers who liked Joe/Joan would also like his book. He has written many quality stories over the years on SOL which I think many readers here would like.
