Welcome to the new Spearfish Lake Tales message board! This forum has been hosted on Voy.com since the inception. Voy has had reliability issues in the past, and I've just waited them out until the thing recovered. At this point it's been partially down for nearly two weeks -- I can get on it from the office, but not from home, and a couple of friends from around the country have not been able to get on it either. Frankly, this has gone on long enough. While I've had good luck with Voy.com for many years, the software and capabilities of the board have changed very little. I suspect it's a shoestring deal run out of someone's basement, and it shows; this new board has a lot more capabilities, bells and whistles, many of which I've turned off in order to simplify things. Proboards has a good reputation from what I've been able to find out from briefly checking on it. It offers a good deal more support than Voy, so we'll give it a whirl and see what happens. This means that we are losing the archive of messages on Voy -- one of the reasons I've been reluctant to change -- but I will leave the old board up just in case it comes back for everyone. I can't find a switch to make it "read only" but I can put it on moderation and not approve new posts, which amounts to the same thing. Another reason I've been reluctant to make the change is that it will mean changing many hotlinks on the spearfishlaketales.com website -- I'm guessing over sixty. I will change the links on the main page and the current story page immediately, but it may take me a while on the other pages. If you click on the link and it takes you to the old page, there will be an announcement and a hotlink to the new page. Just to help get things going, I'm going to copy the leading messages from a few threads on the old board. You are welcome to respond. In fact, I wish you would, or start new threads, because I would like to see a little more energetic discussion. There are plenty of things that can be kicked around, so let's kick them! I probably ought to point out that Proboards has a much more modern captcha system than we had on Voy.com, although it'll take a little getting used to. It involves a grid of pictures popping up, and you have to click on the pictures that match a statement. It's there to cut down on robotic posts, which have been a pain in the neck from time to time. Enough already! Thanks for your forbearance in this difficult time. Now, let's use the thing! -- Wes

Actually Wes, I`m one of those who have been unable to get through to the old forum, but as well as that was looking for a replacement for my old yahoo forum and was considering Proboards as one of three possible choices myself.

So far, so good -- but we'll see in the next few weeks as I learn a few more of the bells and whistles.

Actually the only feature that it doesn't have that I would have liked to see was a notification ability, which is something I found useful on the Yahoo Forum.

I'm glad you decided to start a new forum. I've enjoyed the forum almost as much as your stories. Is the hat you're wearing a Tilly hat? It looks pretty good to me.

I am glad for the change. I have missed the forum as I have been reading it regularly. This may be some work but well worth it. I know Wes is not getting rich from his writings or the efforts he puts into this but he does an excellent job. Thank you.

Just for a couple of updates:
-- I got a notice from Voy.com that they are having network issues and are trying to fix it, but no projection as to when. I guess that means we will eventually get our archive back, but at this point I think I will stay with Proboards.
-- I think I got all of the URLs changes over on the Spearfish Lake Tales pages. It came to somewhere close to a hundred pages that needed modification. I might have missed one somewhere but I guess it's no big deal if I did. However, as always, letting me know about errors or problems is appreciated.

I am reluctant to unless a need for it arises.

Wes Will you eventually turn on Registration? I can see how a free registration process can be useful by make it easier for people to attach their name to posts, and (if the forum works like most others) it will make it easier for them to follow up on their old posts and note which is a new post. It also allows them to upload and link a photo as an avatar, if you allow that.

Wes, I'm sure you were aware of this, but for general information, Ann Rutledge was one of the tragic figures in American history. She was reputed to be Abraham Lincoln's first love. She died at age 22 in a typhoid epidemic. Lincoln made statements later in life confirming the relationship. Lincoln's wife and son became upset if Ann's name was mentioned. Random name generators do come up with some interesting results.
THIS PROBABLY ISN'T THE RIGHT PLACE TO POST THIS, BUT i COULDN'T FIND THAT PLACE.

Yes, I knew that -- I did some research on her before I went ahead and used her name. My decision to use her name actually came from the same logic that Homer will use in another couple of chapters.
As far as this being the proper place to post this, you probably should have started a new thread -- and no problem if you did. But this is all right, and I hope to see you posting here again.
Thanks!
