Several years ago when I first read Circuit Rider, Wes asked me a question about the significance of the locations in the book and where they came. I had to think about it for a while before I came up with an answer. Our intrepid editor Not Wes says Wes didn't ask him or the other editors as far as he knows. I'll post the answer on Wednesday before chapter 24 is posted. Admittedly, it is just a piece of trivia but you may enjoy reading it.

You (Wes) mentioned in a prior email about the place names in this book and wondered if anyone would figure out where they came from. I counted five names: Walke, Tyler, Conestoga, Lexington and Carondelet. The last four were US ships used in the Civil War. Walke was the name of the captain of the Carondelet. He was eventually a rear admiral and had three US ships named after him. Also, James B Eads built the Carondelet. I should have remembered you were student of the Civil War. I guess I had the advantage of having read Joe/Joan and remembered she taught in Eads, Colorado. (Wes changed the name in Joe/Joan) That town and Port Eads, Louisiana were named for James Eads.
The sixth place name in the book is Cooke County. There was no US naval ship named Cooke in the civil war era. Two 20th century ships were named Cook. There were seven warships in the same class built by Eads: Cairo; Carondelet; Cincinnati; Louisville; Mound City; Pittsburg and St Louis (renamed Baron De Kalb). The Cairo and Baron De Kalb were sunk by mines and the Cincinnati and Mound City were sunk by ramming. The wreck of the Cairo was located and recovered in 1956. It is on display in a museum at the Vicksburg National Military Park. (Shay Archer worked as a summer employee there) To be consistent with the other place names in the book, I suggest you rename Cooke County to Cairo County. (Wes never changed the name) The name of the funeral home in Carondelet was Mound-Burton. Was that unintentional or was it named after USS Mound City? (Wes never answered)
Probably Tyler and Eads are the same town. Kiowa County (Walke), population 1380 in 2010. See chapter 1.
