I've been having trouble making this post, and I apologize for making you wait.
Wes's surgery did not go as we had hoped. His health hasn't been great for a long time, and he was a high risk surgical candidate. After his surgery, he wasn't waking up, but we remained pretty optimistic until about a week ago, when his doctors informed us that his organs were failing.
Wes passed away Thursday night around 10 p.m. peacefully. His funeral will be Saturday, March 17.
We're planning on continuing to make updates for him; he apparently still had eight books in the wings, and he always asked us to keep going if something were to ever happen to him. Book orders will be filled as normal, but there may be some delay as we figure things out. My husband, Daniel, will be processing stuff for him and making updates in his absence, and proceeds will be going to my mother in their entirety. He loved his writing, and I know he'd be pleased to know we're carrying on with what he's left.
I'm sorry this isn't the news anyone was expecting, least of all me. I don't have a lot more answers than that right now. I'll try to check in here periodically, but I have the newspaper to figure out right now, and that's going to keep my hands full for a while.

Just checked in to read the latest installment of "Rag Doll" and then the forum for any other SLT talk.
Too say I'm saddened by Wes's passing, is an understatement.
Prayers for Wes's peace.
And now Wes will get to "live" the adventures he has written about for many years.

This breaks my heart. I lost my wife on February 7th, which I told Wes about, and a month later Wes is gone. Rest in Peace, my friend.
Would you be so kind to post the name of a florist in Hudson area or in lieu of flowers, the names of some charitable organizations that Wes favored.
I was a beta reader (since January, 2014) for 13 of Wes' books of which 6 have yet to be published. Any assistance I may offer you, please feel free to contact me. boydpercy@yahoo.com

We'll be asking for donations to the Hudson Foundation in his name in lieu of flowers; I'll try to get that information up here soon. The Foundation supports the schools here in town, and we think he'd be pretty pleased to see money go there.

I've had a lot of enjoyment reading Wes' stories over the years. I've purchased all of them. [in .rtf, the least expensive format][and corrected some of his spellings in those files, where he was in error on geographic names]
I knew he was getting on in years, and wasn't in good health. It's still a bit of a shock.
He'd said that he had made arrangements for the remainder of his works to get posted after his death. I'm glad to hear that this will go forward. And that the proceeds will go to help his wife.
There are bound to be more knowledgeable individuals on the list, but I have done some conversion of .rtf to eBook formats for my own use, and would be willing to provide any assistance that I can. I'm just using Calibre, so it's not the most powerful program, but does have the ability to tweak the eBook after conversion, if not happy with the initial results.
I can be reached at johnbobmead "at" gmail.com
Yours,
John Robert Mead

I had not known that his health was failing. This is quite a shock. Wes and I communicated on occasion, and he once even allowed me to use one of his settings in my stories. My sincerest condolences to to you, Amanda, and to your family. If you need any help from us, his readers and fellow writers, for the continuation of his site, post a note! Argon

Dear Amanda and Daniel
It was with great sadness that I read your post earlier today. I have had great pleasure over many years in reading Wes’ Spearfishlaketales. He has left a magnificent legacy that I, and others around the world, can enjoy. A consummately professional writer who ensured that he could complete a tale before he started to share it and who, almost always, met his self-imposed deadlines; like the professional journalist he was. Over the years we exchanged emails from time to time and I felt I was corresponding with a friend although we never met face to face. I will miss his sympathetic and encouraging replies.
I send you both and his wife my sincere condolences and encourage you to recall the good things he did; they were legion. From central Italy Peter

I simply have no words and am finding it difficult to believe! I have taken so much inspiration from the man and his stories, introduced my creative writing class to his stories and style as "the way to build characters" and as an example of williig suspension of disbelief. God Bless you Wes. Be at peace. Arohanui to your family

Appalling news, I also had no idea there was anything wrong until he had that "major operation" and even then pretty much assumed things would work out.

Oh no ... I am so sad! I can't think of any news that could hit me harder, even news of losing one of my remaining (but dwindling) family members ... Wes, through his writing was like a best friend with sage advice, trusted neighbor or favorite teacher ... How I love Spearfish Lake tales ... It was great how he would introduce a peripheral character in a book and then three books later that character would take the spotlight. He wrote of people you could count on, people who would do the right thing – who would help when necessary and ask for help when needed. I always feel better when I read one of Wes's stories, in fact, I save them for when I'm down and need a lift ... Works every time ... The best days ever were the Fridays I downloaded a final chapter of the latest serial ... Like finding a bag of gold – all for me ... I'm so sorry to lose you Wes ... I'm more thankful to you than I can express ... You are at peace now my friend, goodbye ... My sincere condolences you Amanda and Danial and to the rest of the family of friends and fans ... I share your loss ...
