In some ways, the warning is less a notice to beware than it is an indicator that the subject is treated in a even-handed manner rather than using a "Christianity is the answer to everything" approach. Wes shows the bad and ugly sides of organized religion as well as the good side, which makes his books more interesting to me. That's part of what keeps me reading Wes's stories; he's pretty even handed. And his continuing characters generally reflect that. I'm pretty sure I'm a little further to the Left than he is, but I'd be very happy living in a society dominated by the type of people he tends to write about favorably; the vast majority of the issues I'm worried about just wouldn't exist!

We readers already know of Nanci's history, but for her to come out and confess it the way she did should even open our eyes too!!

Wes, I love it when Crystal rectifies a situation with a guy who has rectal oculitis.

Yeah, she can still kick ass and take names. She's like a mother grizzly with a cub nearby.

To paraphrase a certain philosopher - "I pity the fool that would mess with Crystal's cubs." To be honest, I was half hoping to see that particular scene.

About wishing to see a particular scene, I think I have an idea what is going to happen to Sarah in the last 4 chapters. There have been some hints in the story. Only 2 more weeks to see if I have guessed right. :-) I an not going to write more because it might be seen as a spoiler, even if it is just a guess.

I concur with your expectations. Of ciurse, it's now Thursday a.m., and the next chapter is not yet up. I've read all that Wes has published at this website, and enjoyed his plot and character development. Pity he's slowing down. But, at 75, i, too, am slowing down. And I was never creatIve, nor could I write.

Speaking of, everything ok with Wes? If he runs late, the post is usually up no later than the following morning.

He replied yesterday to an email I had sent him. I think he may be writing another book which is good. He generally responds to emails so you should write him.

Hmmm. Not sure about the ending. Feels like a bit of cop-out. I think the Reverend and Mrs Lackamp's "excuse" is completely out of character. They started as mysoginist Christian missionarys, and for the sake of integrity should have stayed that way. Unless of course there is something devious going on... but that would be out of charater too.

There was something of a hint of "a scheme" - I don't want to say this scheme, but it does also seem rather... cruel. Although there's also a difference between "a few bricks short of a fire-pit" and "bat---- crazy" that we seem to have met him as...
For someone who did not have much hope at the beginning of Down By the Riverside, I'm already missing the Rev Nancy, and will be looking forward to the next book(s).

I think Hickory Run is great completion to Down by the Riverside. I expect the next book to be even better. Chapter 24 tells you where she is going and what she will be doing.

As the one who started off this thread (so long ago!) I have to say I loved it! My only reservation is that, like some others have expressed, I can't believe a minister of religion could be such a . . . sh@t . . . especially when it came to his own daughter. But thanks once again, Wes.

Yup, great book. I liked reading it. And indeed it ended about how I thought it would. ;-) Seems a fitting end.
The thing about Abe..... yup, seems a bit of a twist but then maybe they didn't know of a better way to do it. They sure did guess wrong about his mental state. As Leo wrote: Although there's also a difference between "a few bricks short of a fire-pit" and "bat---- crazy" that we seem to have met him as...
